Motown Makeover: Why Detroit Is Dye-ing for Bold Color Right Now

The Color Capital You Didn't See Coming
Detroit has always reinvented itself. Motor City to Motown to the comeback story of the decade — and now, apparently, the boldest hair color scene in the Midwest. Walk down Cass Avenue or grab a coney in Corktown, and you'll spot it: cherry reds so vivid they could stop traffic on the Lodge, platinum blondes cold enough to make a Polar Bear feel at home, and mermaid tones that belong in a Belle Isle aquarium.
At Curl Up & Dye, we like to say Detroit didn't just rebuild — it re-dyed.
Meet the Shades of the 313
Motor City Cherry. Our signature red, inspired by taillights streaming down I-75 at dusk. It's rich, it's loud, it doesn't apologize. Red is notoriously high-maintenance, but Detroiters aren't scared of a little commitment — we kept the Lions through tougher decades than this.
Polar Bears Roam in Michigan. Icy platinum with cool undertones, perfect for surviving our winters in style. This shade requires serious bleaching and even more serious conditioner. Think of it as a long-term relationship, not a fling.
Renaissance Rose Gold. Warm, wearable, and inspired by the city's creative renaissance — the murals, the galleries, the pop-ups. It flatters nearly every skin tone and fades gracefully, which is more than we can say for some of our exes.
Midnight Woodward. Deep, inky black with blue-violet shimmer. Understated in the office, devastating under neon lights at a Downtown karaoke bar.
Maintenance: The Not-So-Fun Part (But We'll Make It Fun)
Bold color is like a classic car — gorgeous, but it needs upkeep. Our stylists' non-negotiables:
- Wash less, live more. Two to three times a week, max, with sulfate-free shampoo in cool water. Hot water is the arch-nemesis of vibrant color.
- Heat protectant is your best friend. Blow-drying without it is like driving without insurance. In Michigan. In January.
- Purple shampoo for blondes. Brass is for instruments, not hair.
- Gloss every 4–6 weeks. A quick gloss appointment revives tone and shine without a full re-process.
- Deep condition weekly. Bleached hair is thirsty hair. Hydrate it like it's the last week of summer.
Why Detroit? Why Now?
Color trends follow creative energy, and Detroit has it in spades. The city's artists, entrepreneurs, and makers have turned neighborhoods into canvases — and hair is just the most portable canvas of all. Our colorists draw inspiration from everything around them: the palette of Eastern Market on a Saturday morning, the glow of the Guardian Building's azulejo tiles, even the unmistakable green of a Faygo bottle.
One of our senior colorists puts it best: "Detroiters don't do subtle when subtle isn't the assignment. If you're going to transform, transform."
Ready to Take the Plunge?
Book a consultation before committing to a dramatic change. Bring photos, be honest about your maintenance budget (both time and money), and trust your stylist when they say your dream shade might take two sessions, not one. Great color is a journey — and around here, we've never been afraid of a long drive.
