We Ranked America's Groaniest Salon Puns So You Don't Have To

Here at Curl Up & Dye Detroit, we believe a salon name should do two things: tell you what we do and make you exhale through your nose so hard your foils shift. Puns are our love language. So naturally, when the team gathered around the color bar with a whiteboard and an irresponsible amount of coffee, the topic was obvious: which salon puns in America reign supreme?

We rated each contender on three scientific criteria — groan intensity, name-to-service relevance, and how badly we wish we'd thought of it first. Scores were hotly contested. One stylist quit the ranking committee (she came back; we have snacks). Here are the results.

The Official Cringe-O-Meter Rankings

1. Shear Madness (multiple locations) — The undisputed heavyweight champion. It's a real phrase, it's an actual play title, and it works for cuts, color, and chaotic walk-in Fridays alike. Our score: a perfect 10 out of 10 groans. We're not jealous. We're absolutely jealous.

2. Curl Up & Dye (that's us, hi) — Yes, we ranked ourselves. No, we don't see a conflict of interest. There's something deeply satisfying about a name that doubles as an invitation to relax and a description of the appointment. Detroit deserved a pun this warm.

3. Dye Hard Barbershop (various states) — Yippee-ki-yay, indeed. Deducted points only because Bruce Willis has presumably never gotten a balayage here, which feels like a missed crossover opportunity.

4. Hair Today Gone Tomorrow (everywhere, apparently) — A pun so classic it's practically public domain. We counted at least a dozen salons with this name from Florida to Oregon, which either proves its brilliance or its inevitability. Possibly both.

5. The Mane Event (nationwide infestation) — Somewhere out there, a bride is getting her updo done at The Mane Event while a horse-themed party happens in the next room. Beautiful. Chaos. Cinema.

6. A Cut Above (the one in every strip mall) — Look, it's fine. It's competent. It's the beige couch of salon puns. It didn't earn the top five, but we respect the hustle.

7. Bleach, Please (Los Angeles) — Young, punchy, and slightly rude — the Aperol spritz of salon names. Bonus points for sounding like something you'd text your best friend at 11 p.m.

8. Waves of Grace (coastal towns) — For the salons that wanted a pun but also wanted their grandmothers to approve. Sweet, gentle, and only mildly groan-worthy.

In Defense of the Groan

Now for the hot take portion of this article: pun-branded salons are simply better businesses than the ultra-sleek, all-lowercase, single-word minimalist salons that have taken over Instagram.

Hear us out. When a name makes people smile before they've even walked in the door, half the emotional work of a great salon experience is done. A pun signals that the people inside don't take themselves too seriously — which, in an industry that can sometimes feel intimidating, is a genuine service. Nobody has ever felt judged by a sign that says "Shear Madness." The same cannot be said for a black-and-white storefront that just says "obscura."

Puns are also memorable in a way minimalism isn't. "Curl Up & Dye" sticks in your brain after one exposure. "Studio Aesth" requires a marketing budget and a podcast sponsorship. In a city like Detroit — where personality is the whole point and we've never met a wall we couldn't paint a mural on — a good groan feels right at home.

A Note From the Chairs

If you run a pun-named salon anywhere in this great country: we see you, we love you, and we're sorry the Cringe-O-Meter was so harsh. Groans are just laughs wearing a disguise. And if you're a client deciding between the minimalist studio and the place called The Mane Event? Book the pun. Your hair — and your sense of humor — will thank you.

Come see us at Curl Up & Dye Detroit, where the puns are free and the color consultations are even better. Dye hard, Motor City. Dye hard.
