In the heart of Detroit’s Cass Corridor, across the street from the soon-to-be-complete-Auburn, stands a true landmark of local business and entrepreneurship in Midtown – Curl Up & Dye Salon. The salon is a full-service venue for all beauty and cosmetic needs with a focus on natural. In fact, Curl Up & Dye is the only nontoxic and sustainable hair salon — let alone full service personal care shop — in Michigan.
Through the vision of owner and stylist Jennifer Willemsen, Curl Up & Dye has reached the 3-years-old mark – or, in scientific terms, a toddler of a business (nearly 4!). In December 2008, Willemsen decided to pursue her dream of an all-natural salon that has now blossomed into a thriving business in the Midtown area. On a weekly basis, the shop serves over 100 clients with at least 70% return of customers business. The salon currently supports 10 to 12 employees, including 6 licensed professionals and support staff.
“In the beginning there was nothing,” Willem recalls. “Planned Parenthood had just arrived and we were surrounded by empty spaces. Now I live here, I know my neighborhood needs, I know where a person like me would want to go and what kind of standards I have.”
Willemsen’s local perspective and understanding of needs has certainly met with vibrant demand from the community. The shop continues to grow, including with the development of an all-natural skin care line, the Cass Corridor brand. “The brand was created out of a simple and strong demand for organic and nontoxic products within the salon,” she says.
Totally want to switch stylists now, don’t you? Curl Up & Dye offers a wide range of services, from the basic haircut for both men and women to waxing, electrolysis, massage and nails. Generally, the salon does not have available time for walk-ins and requests that appointments are made two weeks in advance especially for complicated styles or new clients. Details of the services offered and prices are available at their website or go old school and give ‘em a ring at 313-833-5006.
