NEW FOR THE NEW YEAR!! (Updated 12/11)

We’ve been up to a ton and have nearly grown too big for our britches. Celebrating our 3rd Anniversary in December 2012, Curl Up & Dye has once again doubled its new clients in another year, amassing over 5,000 total. With over 2,000 clients in our little shop for services every month…that’s an average of over 700 per week…we’ve come to understand that the services, environment and purpose we provide are wanted and needed…and we continue to rise to the occasion by seeking out and making available all manor of non-toxic and sustainable items for head to toe.

Over the past year alone, we’ve doubled in new client numbers, continued to find better, healthier personal care options for our community, developed and launched our very own in house organic skin and hair care line for men and women, won a few more “Best Of” awards, and added several types of services based on our customer requests…

In addition, Jen has been working hard as a Mentee at Tech Town and has been gearing up the shop and the neighborhood for a more sustainable Curl Up & Dye. With every intention of staying in the neighborhood…and even expanding…we now have been taught the tools and been provided the resources to strengthen and fortify our business, which had quickly grown from small to medium. You’ll still find the quaint and casual environment and staff you have come to know, but we’re getting ready to cinch our belts and pull ourselves into the next “level” over the coming year.

To make this transition and expansion possible, we’ll have to make a few changes and some tough decisions, but ALL for the betterment of our community. As our standard “costs of doing business” have increased every year for us, in addition to investing in new product lines such as Vapour, our organic cosmetic line and Neuma, our favorite new line of organic and sustainable haircare products, we have never raised our prices. In fact, regretfully, Jen has come to understand that Curl Up’s pricing structure was essentially starving us out of business, much to her dismay, as many, including us, would’ve thought us to be doing better than expected with the typical set backs and challenges any would face when opening up a new small business, like low cash flow and lack of profit while paying back start up costs.

To make ourselves right and truly set our little shop down the right path to sustained success, one of the changes you’ll notice is a price increase on several of our hair services. This price increase will be needed to cover a few things, like another, yet typical, increase in the cost of our chemicals and hair color, as well as utilities, property taxes, building dues and rent. We know that for some of you, this will present itself financially as a challenge, as it does us. We will continue to sincerely recommend and provide only the most necessary products and services, including making sure you really need to refresh all of your color, instead of just a root touch up, saving an average of $30 per visit…as we always have.

Our neighbors and clients are our first priority. In just 3 short years, our network has grown to many, bringing immense opportunity for growth and sustainability. We feel it is our task to make this business the very best it can be, but to do this, change has to come. We have a high amount of operating costs, and believe us, we DO NOT spend frivolously and we take care of our environment ensuring its longevity. We could not stay in business anywhere without these changes. The fact of the matter is that owning any hair salon, even full service, is not the difficult part. The biggest challenge we face is to be able to provide non-toxic products and services as we do in an industry that is not embracing of our mission. We have no industry or corporate support, as many shops do, and in fact, make much of our own products due to the lack of access or care from suppliers and producers. We are the ONLY shop like this in 3 States and certainly the only in Michigan. The reason is that it is HARD! We love it and believe in it. Together, with the support, understanding and patronage of our community, Curl Up & Dye looks ahead to many pleasant years with our friends.

As our need to restructure and catch up is great, our new pricing will be effective January 1, 2012. Please know that we understand and regret this need, but our only other option is to move on within a few short months. We run a tight ship and plan to continue to do great, so please join us in the New Year to celebrate our growth and futures in the community we love most!

To help soothe the sting, we’ve made ALL retail products 10% OFF till 2012, so come in and stock up on gifts for you and yours! We promise that our prices will never become unreasonable and we will always continue to provide the best services, products, environment and prices you could find in comparable salons. Chin up! Our prices are still lower than Flip, Salon 6, Black and any of those perceived fancy in the “burbs”…not to mention, our products are non-toxic…a business attribute no other can boast.

Warm regards,

Everyone from Curl Up & Dye Detroit
