HOWEVER, WE PREFER THE HEALTHY APPROACH…

Health…making well informed choices that maximize well-being.

Sustain…Strengthen or support physically or mentally.

The way we care for ourselves shapes everything about us. Consider the following:

An average woman applies more than 200 chemicals to her skin each day;
approximately 60% of these chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream.
With the number of people with eczema, allergies and other health related issues like cancer on the rise – could these conditions be aggravated by the growing number of chemicals used in our personal care products?

Consider carefully not only what goes on your skin, but your hair as well. Many hair care products contain potentially unhealthy ingredients (harmful not only to us, but to our environment). Shampoos cause the greatest number of adverse reactions of all hair care products. This difficulty is exacerbated by when & where these chemicals are applied: at our skins most vulnerable time – when we are in, or right after, a hot shower. Hot water (and soaps) washes off our skin’s protective sebum while opening pores and allowing skin to more readily accept whatever chemicals we apply.

These harsh detergents, chemical fragrances and numerous irritating compounds have damaging long-term side effects.

NEUMA, our featured non-toxic haircare resource, like us, recognizes the need to provide products that are free of carcinogens, harmful chemicals and environmental toxins. Their products are lovingly formulated free of parabens, gluten, disodium EDTA, benzyl alcohol, SLS, SLES and other risky ingredients.

NEUMA was developed by a leading team of cosmetic chemists. Their challenge – to create a professional performance hair care line that would be free of ingredients suspected of contributing to human or environmental health problems.  By incorporating essential oils, certified organic extracts, essential fatty acids and vegetable proteins, our products treat your hair, and our environment, with kindness. These safe, mild ingredients leave your hair healthy and silky with a radiant shine. Their stylists and friends, as well as ours, painstakingly test each of their formulas to ensure true professional performance honoring our natural, healthy and organic principals.

Likewise, Cass Brand Organics, our in-house non-toxic skin, hair & bodycare products were born from our shop’s need to provide non-toxic, professional quality products to our community. Much like Neuma, we strive to sustain ourselves and our community by striving to provide access to not only sustainable products and business practices, but through community education and product support. Life is head to toe…because everything matters.

I was wondering if you were at all familiar with the Curly Girl book and its method of cutting curly hair. Does anyone at your salon cut curly hair dry?

Ok, so on my way home from my hair appointment yesterday, the front axle on my car snapped in the middle of a busy intersection. My boyfriend rushed to the scene and the first thing he said, before even looking at the car, was “I LOVE YOUR NEW HAIR!”

    Thnks again! xx

I continue to recommend your salon to many friends. So far, I only know of one that has actually gone and also loved it. I know many others will come, too. I haven’t been able to fit another appointment in since my first one but I cannot wait to go back. I appreciate the professionalism and expertise displayed by everyone at your salon. I voted for you right away when the Metro Times Best of Detroit voting started. Great job!

Whoa- Just realized I could comment back…duh…

    To answer some questions-

Kristen – I’m personally mildly familiar with the “Curly Girl Handbook” but we do occasionally cut curly hair dry. If you’re overly curly or tightly curled and wear it straight, typically we’ll cut while straight. If you wear it curly, we cut wet usually. In a lot of cases, the proper use of a sharpened straight razor on very wet hair yields a nice sculpted shape without overly texturizing the ends or creating damage that can be caused by slicing the hair with scissors. Plus, our haircut price includes a wash and a reasonably functional and totally versatile finish, so most hair gets wet first anyhow.

Loam – We do not do digital perms, curly or straightening…but we do offer many quality options for chemical retexturizing from damage free “temporary” products all the way on up to the real deal for those stubborn, yet healthy, follicles. Just schedule a chemical consultation with any of the girls and together, you can decide the most healthy option for YOUR hair.

Yagel Bussey – I wish one of us had more Spanish-speaking skills. Unfortunately, the best I have to say for myself, and the shop, 2 years of intermediate Spanish in high school has almost completely escaped me…yet helpful in Puerto Rico! Regardless, we’ll do our best to help you and yours feel comfortable communicating your ideas. Feel free to bring someone with you to interpret if you know of anyone…

Elizabeth – Our current hours are listed toward the top of this page, but do not include Sunday hours. We roughly change up our hours seasonally, as necessary, and welcome any suggestions.

    Mariah – Pixie cuts…totally “do-able”! By anyone here…

Christian – We definitely offer relaxing services, but only carry a couple different product options because there are very few safe, quality products available on the market. Ours is from the Kemon Brand and comes to us straight off a shipping barge from Italy, along with our awesome haircolor which is PPD free! Look into this and you’ll see why I’m bragging. Let’s just say its toxic and in ALL American haircolor… That being said, please schedule a chemical consultation with any of the girls at the shop and together you’ll diagnose the best options for your hair. Our straightening process require the hair to be dried and flat-ironed afterward (and left in a completely straight texture for a few days) for optimum results and we strongly recommend a haircut if not at that time, then within a week or so to really bring the service full circle. Haircuts are priced as a separate service. If you have any more questions, the best way to get answers is to call the shop and speak with a stylist who can help you get there. Many times, new clients come into the shop thinking they want a relaxer, when really, its the WORST option for what’s going on currently with their hair or lifestyle or finances, and end up opting for a more natural texture…which we wholeheartedly embrace! I would say only 1 in 10 new African American clients seeking relaxers actually end up getting that service, once they get some knowledge around hair and chemistry and know the difference…common sense says STOP! And we DO! Even if you REALLY REALLY want to do it. We’re thinking of ya! Hope to hear from you soon! Relaxers require a ton of education and skill set…not for the faint of heart or damaged hair.

Sorry all about the unanswered questions, but just calling is the best way to get these questions answered…but I will admit typing out this info for all to peek at will help, I’m sure.

Thanks to all 3000+ of our new clients in less than 2 years! Remember, not only do new client referrals get you discounts (only when new clients bring in a referral card with your name on it…sorry, strict policy) but they positively drive our business into the future. I’d estimate that of our 3000+ clients, at least 80% of them come back time and time again AND at least 90% of them are from personal referrals! My favorite kind of advertisement! We don’t even bother with paid advertisements…so be sure to get yourself some referral card and start leaving them around town…we get at least 15 a day…some from friends, some from bathrooms, some from bars, some from museums and workplaces…new clients are everywhere and we want to help you earn some discounts…but you have to use the referral card.

Thanks so much and stop by anytime to say hi or just see what we’re up to. We have new specials every month and otherwise very fair service prices.

    Jen

MANDY rules! She LISTENS to what you want and actually is able to deliver it. I have had some pretty prestigeous hands run through my hair and I include Mandy at the top of my list along with Nicki at Bumble and Bumble NYC and Rob at Cavale and Tonuzi in Brooklyn. Mandy is able to incorporate the “urban edge” into my style and that is very important to me. On top of her skill and client service, she kicks the whole kit and kaboodle up several notches by being very affordable. Did I mention how absolutely fabulous the place is designed and how easy it is to park?

Hi, looking forward to getting my hair dyed here. The shop looks absolutely amazing!! I live right down the street and never been inside, I pass it almost everyday on my way back from WSU. I also have a question, hopefully someone will read this and answer it. Can I bring my own hair dye or do you only use the products that you provide?

  30. Jen says:
    December 20, 2011 at 10:07 pm

Sorry, Janee. We only use our own dye, which is most importantly, ppd free (a toxic polymer found in all American hair color). We use only Kemon, shipped from their lab in Italy.

    Hey Ashantae!

First off Andrea, I’d introduce you to our friend Nioxin. Its a gentle scalp/follical clarification system that cleanses the bi-product that clogs follicles over time and causes everything from excess shedding or sporadic/thinned growth to extremely balding. This bi-product is waste our body gets rid of throught the follicle, consisting of excess hormones, chemicals, etc., caused by pregnancy, chemo-therapy, age, or possibly a common genetic defect causing your body to lose its ability to naturally cleanse the follicle itself. Also, this product keeps your scalp, neck, shoulders and back super clean and healthy just from the run-off water! Most clients have noticeable results within just 1-3 months. At 1/2 an inch of growth per month, it’d become apparent by month 2 in the form of those once pesky fly-aways, now in the form of fresh, new baby hair. Kinda like hitting the reset button. It’s not like Rogain or anything and it’s not a stimulant or medication. In fact, you just use it like any other regular shampoo/conditioner…the more the better!

Secondly, I’d be willing to bet that the right length and shape is most important in the meantime. We’ve seen much change with a few seemingly simple snips of the scissors…

Feel free to stop in any time to chat with one of the girls about Nioxin or their recommendations on hair cuts and styles.

I was wondering, going by the name of your salon, if you have anyone who specializes in punk, steam punk, emo or goth hairstyles and drastic colors. My son wears a mohawk and I have trouble getting any color except pink to stay in his hair. And even the pink does not hold as well as it did for my daughter.

  34. Jen says:
    February 7, 2012 at 8:59 pm

    Michelle,

For a longwinded YES!, please read below. Otherwise, YES!

We do all kinds of vivid color applications. We use professional color from a few sources to keep our hands on a wide palette of color that looks great but has staying power as well. Even more importantly than finding the color is what you do, or have done in the past, to that hair with color/chemicals, such as pre-lightening or bleaching the hair before applying vivid color. You will definitely find the color to look better longer when you pre-lighten correctly while balancing the hairs’ chemistry with an appropriate regimen of hair care products, most importantly, a reconstructive deep conditioner with protein. This will not only repair damage done in the past, but it will effectively protect it during coloring services, as well as continue to rebuild and fortify each strand…giving us a ton of freedom to do whatever we want with color and chemicals…always getting shiny, long-lasting color, that gets better and brighter with each application.

A note on color choice…Red will always be the hardest to achieve, maintain AND remove. Blue and green seem to prove to be a pain most of the time as well. However, when you get there, its brilliant…but removal is also a bear. Please don’t ask to go from these colors to platinum blonde! Its nearly impossible without totally destroying the hair…which we WILL NOT do in our shop. Pink and purple are great color choices as far as color endurance and removal…due to being a mixture of both cool (blue) and warm (red). Red could be improved upon slightly by adding blue, violet, orange or yellow in small parts to get better color longevity with a less hideous fade out. Depending on the color you choose, you’ll need to pre-lighten to a pretty specific color to get the desired results…most people lighten way too much, which results in poor longevity…even if it looks great when you first color it.

So again, YES!, we can do it all…and nerd out, quite frankly, of the chemistry of it all.

Mandy is wonderful! She makes you feel very comfortable and listens to your needs and concerns. By the way, my husband loves the highlights! Thanks again!
